A very unique and comical view of life, death and all that comes after it. This very darkly humorous but strangely heart warming tale follows the unremarkable Bernard Fish as he learns that living is far less simple than he thought. He also discovers that being dead is more exciting than he could ever have imagined, not that he has ever had much of an imagination. Betrayal, greed, love and lust all play a part in this simple everyday story of an ordinary man who wasn't supposed to know he was going to die.

This is a clever story that I very much enjoyed and highly recommend. The chapter entitled, "The Rules of the Game" alone is worth the cover price. But ... although Mr. Halliday makes it clear on his author page that he doesn't like to be told how to write, I have to point out to him and his readers that a quick check-through by a competent copy editor to correct the typos and misspellings would have turned this very good book into a really great book, resulting in more sales for him and more enjoyment for his readers. It seems a shame that he prefers to skip such a simple step, but as Bernard Fish might say, "What does it really matter anyway?"Product details

The expected demise of Bernard Fish Mr Ed Halliday 9781500941208 Books Reviews
This was an interesting outlook on the afterlife.
I enjoyed this book because it provided a not-usual twist on untimely demise. It's not "A Tale of Two Cities"--but 1 of those is enough! I loved following Bernard in the afterlife.
Very enjoyable, lighthearted read of what might await each and every one of us. No need to be apprehensive if this author's idea of the afterlife is anywhere close.
I read for pleasure everyday. This was a short, entertaining story. I chose to read this story as a break from very long convoluted novels. I enjoyed the story, I LOL at some of the behaviors of the characters. It was fun to read. I passed it on to friends and family to read. 4 stars because the ending was a little weak.
I thoroughly enjoyed the story until the end. I was confused about the doctor and Mortimer, had this doctor been molested in Rogers previous life or what.
Bernard Fish was happy with his new found love, after death?
Overall it held my interest.
This was a book club read. At first I did not like it but kept reading. Then I wondered what author would write this - what was the thought process. I became intrigued. By the end of the book I liked it. The book club discussion was extremely interesting as it made for a super discussion. Recommend it especially for a book club.
As humans we foolishly believe we are immortal. We live life like we have all the time in the world. Bernard thought he was prepared for everything in life- even his eventual death. However, no amount of preparation could make his journey into the afterlife easy. A bumbling "Angel" and the "Grim Reaper/s" manage to make his transformation a comedy of errors and the best time he has ever had in his life- err, in his death! I have to give praise to Halliday for putting a unique twist on the evolution of man. Very imaginative and beautifully written.
