The journey of a young Altar Boy who seeks to leave an abusive home life by entering into the seminary to become a Roman Catholic priest. This fictional true-to-life journey is of a boy abused by his priest, bullied, and led into isolated confusion. Innocence is lost, and sexual betrayal, rape, social isolation ensue. One friend and classmate remains a gay support and helps him survive. He finds a way through the sexual labyrinth and succeeds in overcoming his hardships and ultimately achieves a healthy gay life. This is a first person account of a youth's awakenings to erotic feelings, detailed abuse, rape, love, promiscuity, and eventual psychic overload. Raped, enchanted by confusing visions of angels, misled by the clergy, the protagonist tells all of his responses to years of abuse in real time. Positive intervention leads to a social work resolution to a life begun in ruins. This is a profound journey of loss and hope.

As the author of over 200 books, it's a simple fact that I don't have the time that I once did to sit down and read a book for pure pleasure. However, there are certain times when a book comes along, so highly recommended by people whose opinions I respect, that I feel duty-bound to sit down for a few hours to immerse myself in some piece of literature other than my own. The most recent case in point being Roy Kirby Chaudoir's METTRAY SEMINARY: THE UNTOLD STORY.

As the mastermind behind the BOY'S REFORMATORY SERIES aka Alan (Boys Reformatory Series)(found as Kindles), I've always been fascinated by same-sex environments, whether they be within the penal system, American private schools, English "public" schools, convents, monasteries, abbeys, or, as in the case of Chaudoir's METTRAY, a Catholic seminary.

With the kind of story-telling that had me thinking of Jean Genet, Chaudoir's METTRAY is a fascinating tale of a young altar boy whose abusive home life leads him into entering a Roman Catholic seminary to become a priest. And if the work is labeled fiction, as it is, I personally know enough about what Chaudoir writes to know that a good deal of it comes off surprisingly based in actual fact.

While the reader is given access to many of the secrets inherent within this type of isolated church experience, including sexual misconduct and brutality by priests and seminarians alike, the main character is subjected to sexual betrayal, sexual abuse, and social isolation as he struggles to find his way and remain true to himself and to his religious convictions.

METTRAY is the first-person account of one youth's awakenings to sexuality, abuse, love, promiscuity, exploitation by venal clergy and his peers, eventually, to experience the psychic overload that conjures for him confusing visions of heavenly beings.

Does the protagonist survive, remain in the church, find happiness, find mental stability, and emerge from the ruins of loss and abuse, like the mythical Phoenix, to undergo renewal? I won't spoil the ending, only recommend that anyone interested in the secrets of what so often does go on behind closed doors, shouldn't miss reading this fascinating, albeit fictionalized, rendering of the often disturbing reality.

Mettray Seminary The Untold Story Roy Kirby Chaudoir 9781257973187 Books Reviews

This story was simply heartbreaking. Knowing that it was in the non-fiction category made it easier for me to judge. The story meandered, and I could tell there was much the author did not reveal, or lessened in his retelling... and still it made me cry for him. The story was hard to follow, weaving back and forth... I felt almost guilty, as though I were eavesdropping on his private confessions or his therapy sessions. I think he was terribly brave to write the story at all, and even more so to submit it to you.

Almost perfection. Although fiction this is an interest geared book as it uses the church and its paedophilia issues as a backdrop. That said this is a raw emotional book that will hold readers from page one right to the end as it follows one young man journey to acceptance. Writing was superb, timeline was clean and uncluttered.
It's difficult for me to write this review. It has been 12 hours since I finished the novel and I'm still possessed by it. Another reason is what to say without being a spoiler to those who have yet to read it. When you read this story I believe you will know exactly what I am going through!

So. In a nut shell, this is an unbelievable accounting of an adolescent with a physically and emotionally abusive home life who looks toward the Roman Catholic Seminary for relief and guidance in his decision to serve God. Unfortunately, this finds him entering a seminary that repeatedly allows a few of its members, both clergy and students, to steal the innocence from its youths dedicated to serving God and manipulate their naivety with their gross, wanton, insidious personal desires. These ruthless individuals manage to cause Thaddeus to experience a psychotic episode from which he may not recover and to become a personage he was never meant to be.

Roy will have you second guessing Tadpole's and other character's decisions. You will feel the confusion and anger dripping from the pages. You will understand how it feels to have obstacles deliberately thwarting your every step. Mr. Chaudoir will give you no choice but to live alongside him as he weaves his tale.

Will Tadpole overcome his confusions brought on by abuse and remain a devotee to God? Will love replace lust for him? Or will he be utterly defeated, his resolve and determination ripped from him? Well, you're just going to have to read the story to find out; I'm not telling!

You may or may not be caught by surprise at its ending, left with your mouth agape or a smile on your lips. However, if you are a true romantic such as myself, it will take you quite some time to clear your eyes; I'm still trying!
